3D mapping of the Crab Nebula with SITELLE – I. Deconvolution and kinematic reconstruction

ABSTRACT We present a hyperspectral cube of the Crab Nebula obtained with imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SITELLE on Canada–France–Hawaii telescope. describe our techniques used to deconvolve 310 000 individual spectra ($R = 9\, 600$) containing H?, [N ii] ??6548, 6583, and [S ??6716, 6731 emission lines create detailed 3D reconstruction supernova (SN) remnant (SNR) assuming uniform global expansion. find that general boundaries volume occupied by are not strictly ellipsoidal as commonly assumed, instead appear follow ‘heart-shaped’ distribution is symmetrical about plane pulsar wind torus. Conspicuous restrictions in bulk gas consistent constrained expansion coincide positions dark bays east–west band He-rich filaments, which may be associated interaction pre-existing circumstellar disc. The filaments follows an intricate honeycomb-like arrangement straight rounded at large small scales anticorrelated distance from centre unlike large-scale rings observed SNRs 3C 58 Cassiopeia A, where it has been attributed turbulent mixing processes encouraged outwardly expanding plumes radioactive 56Ni-rich ejecta. These characteristics reflect critical details original SN 1054 CE its progenitor star, favour low-energy explosion iron-core progenitor. demonstrate main findings robust despite regions non-homologous driven acceleration material nebula.
